What each insurer actually covers, any visit caps, and how billing reaches them directly, by province, plus what applies Canada-wide.

National private insurers (TELUS eClaims)
Acupuncture is a standard, commonly-covered extended-health benefit with most major national carriers (Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Green Shield, Desjardins, iA Financial Group, Empire Life), typically routed through the TELUS Health eClaims network. Exact eligibility can depend on whether TCM/acupuncture is regulated in your province: some carriers require provincial licensure for the claim to pay out, others accept recognized-association membership where no college exists. There's no public self-serve vendor signup for TELUS eClaims itself; a practice-management vendor has to be approved as an integration partner directly with TELUS Health's software partnership team. Confirm eligibility with each insurer directly.
Auto insurance (ICBC)
ICBC pre-authorizes 12 acupuncture treatments in the first 12 weeks after a crash, no referral needed, currently around $115/treatment. Direct billing runs through ICBC's Health Care Provider Portal.
Workers' compensation (WorkSafeBC)
Covered for CCHPBC-registered practitioners: up to 8 visits in the first 8 weeks need no pre-approval. Direct billing via the WorkSafeBC Provider Portal.
Extended health (Blue Cross)
Served by Pacific Blue Cross, which also covers Yukon. Direct billing via its Insta-Claim network for CCHPBC-registered practitioners.
MSP direct billing (Teleplan)
MSP covers acupuncture only for patients on supplementary benefits (Premium Assistance), capped at a combined 10 visits/year across all supplementary therapies. A clinic bills through Teleplan either via a billing service already approved as a vendor by Health Insurance BC, or by becoming an approved vendor itself. New vendors start by calling the Teleplan Support Centre at 1-866-456-6950 (press 3, then 2) to request a Receipt Agreement. This is BC/MSP-specific; see Direct Billing above for TELUS eClaims, which every province's patients can use.
Auto insurance
Acupuncture is covered up to $350/claim under Alberta's standard Section B benefits. There's no province-wide direct-billing portal; billing is arranged per insurer.
Workers' compensation (WCB-Alberta)
Covered for contracted Registered Acupuncturists, with direct billing to WCB-Alberta via provider invoicing forms.
Extended health (Blue Cross)
Served by Alberta Blue Cross, which also covers the Northwest Territories. Direct online claims submission for College of Acupuncturists of Alberta registrants.
Auto insurance (SGI)
Acupuncture may be covered as part of a broader treatment plan under SGI's no-fault program. It isn't approvable as a stand-alone treatment. Visit limits aren't publicly confirmed; confirm current terms with SGI or the Saskatchewan Acupuncture Association.
Workers' compensation (WCB Sask)
Coverage for standalone acupuncturists isn't clearly confirmed from public materials. Contact WCB Sask directly to confirm your eligibility as a billing provider.
Extended health (Blue Cross)
Served by Saskatchewan Blue Cross (underwritten by Medical Services Incorporated, a separate company from Manitoba Blue Cross). Coverage is plan-dependent; confirm directly.
Auto insurance (MPI): please read before assuming coverage
MPI's own coverage rules tie acupuncture to treatment delivered by an accredited physician, physiotherapist, athletic therapist, chiropractor, or dentist. MPI does not appear to recognize standalone TCM/acupuncture clinics as a direct-billing category. Confirm directly with MPI before assuming your clinic can bill.
Workers' compensation (WCB Manitoba)
Coverage is conditional on acupuncture being delivered by a medical doctor, physiotherapist, or chiropractor. The WCB Manitoba eHealth Portal is not open to independent acupuncturists.
Extended health (Blue Cross)
Served by Manitoba Blue Cross, which also covers Nunavut. Manitoba has no statutory TCM college, so eligibility runs through voluntary association membership (e.g. CMAAC, Manitoba Professional Acupuncture Association).
Auto insurance
Under Ontario's Minor Injury Guideline, acupuncture shares a pooled $3,500 medical/rehab benefit with physiotherapy, chiropractic, and massage therapy. Direct billing runs through HCAI, mandatory for every Ontario auto insurer, but only clinics holding an active FSRA Service Provider Licence can bill directly.
Workers' compensation (WSIB)
Covered when delivered by a regulated professional (physio/massage/chiro) certified in acupuncture. Ontario has no standalone WSIB acupuncturist category. Direct billing via the WSIB/TELUS Health provider portal.
Extended health (Blue Cross)
Ontario Blue Cross and Quebec Blue Cross are the same company (Canassurance Hospital Service Association) under two provincial names. Ontario's Complete Health plan covers up to $400/yr for CTCMPAO-registered practitioners.
Auto insurance (SAAQ)
SAAQ covers acupuncture when accident-related and physician-prescribed, delivered by an OAQ member. This is a reimbursement model (the patient claims and is reimbursed), not direct billing. Confirm the current per-treatment rate with SAAQ.
Workers' compensation (CNESST)
CNESST fully covers physician-prescribed acupuncture at no cost to the worker, billed directly via form 2268.
Extended health (Blue Cross)
Quebec Blue Cross (Croix Bleue du Québec) is the same company as Ontario Blue Cross. Quebec's Santé complète plan covers up to $400/yr ($55/visit) for OAQ-registered practitioners.
Auto insurance
Acupuncture may be covered as part of New Brunswick's Section B benefits when physician-prescribed. No NB-specific regulation names acupuncturists directly. Confirm coverage with the patient's insurer.
Workers' compensation (WorkSafeNB)
WorkSafeNB's own acupuncture page confirms coverage "when appropriate," billed per its fee schedule.
Extended health (Blue Cross)
Served by Medavie Blue Cross, which covers all four Atlantic provinces as one entity. New Brunswick has no statutory TCM college, so eligibility runs through voluntary association membership (e.g. the Maritime Association of Registered Acupuncturists).
Auto insurance
Nova Scotia explicitly names acupuncturists as "adjunct therapists" under its auto insurance protocols: up to 10 visits for minor injuries or 21 for more severe ones, combined with other adjunct therapies. No standardized direct-billing portal; billing is arranged per insurer.
Workers' compensation (WCB Nova Scotia)
Covered only when delivered by or supervised by a WCB-approved physiotherapist, chiropractor, or doctor, not as a standalone acupuncturist billing category.

Served by Medavie Blue Cross, covering all four Atlantic provinces. Newfoundland and Labrador's TCM college (CTCMPANL) is a statutory regulator, so registration there is the eligibility path.
